This is a story of how I overcame the Lowest days of my life with the help of Self-Help Books.
Soooo, Where to begin. It’s been pretty intense the last 2-3 months or so, and even the most rational and calm people are feeling the effects of this global pandemic.
I am a highly extroverted person ( I like being around people and I recharge when I go outside and meet new people ). That’s a reason I was a bit afraid of what’s to come. 1.5 months into the lockdown made me realize a hell lot of things about people around me and mostly about myself.
I was on a roller coaster ride of all the emotional chemicals inside my body. I cried, felt hopeless, anxious, afraid, useless, and whatnot. And some of the ways I took care of myself in those days were by doing journaling, talking to my close ones, trying new things, and reading self-help books.
What are Self-Help Books?
Best self-help books are a gateway to the real world but also give you unconventional solutions to your personal and professional problems. There has been a book corresponding to all your problems. You just need to pick the right one from the shelf. Trust me on that!!
If someone asks me, Why should I read books? I say,
There’s no other way you can live multiple people’s lives. When you read books you delve into so many characters at a time. You live their whole life in a few pages. Isn’t that awesome !?Shubhangi Jain

1. Dear stranger, I know how you Feel by Ashish Bagrecha
The number 1 book that helped me calm down on the days of anxiety. I found myself crying while reading this book. Ashish Bagrecha’s written words have the power to touch my heart in such a way that it felt like he was beside me and was personally assuring me that it is normal to have ups and downs in this life in a voice that has warmed the cockles of my heart. This is one of those books that put a stop to my panic attacks. This book made me feel so comfortable and safe.
The book is a collection of 30 letters and poems on life, love, hope, healing & universe, for people who are feeling low to help them cope with the cloud of vulnerable emotions.

2. 4 Hour Workweek- Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and join the new rich by Timothy Ferriss.
I got this book because the title really fascinated me in the first place. The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss is the ultimate blueprint on lifestyle design.
This book is for doers, it asks you to complete certain tasks at the moment! And at the core, this book is a productivity book. It’ll teach you how to automate, how to delegate, how to eliminate, how to outsource, how to apply the 80-20 rule to your business, how to be more efficient, get more stuff done. So then you can go live the life of your dreams.

3. Atomic habits by James clear
Umm…I would say I love this book the most, because of the time when I got this, I was going through that phase of the lockdown when I needed a distraction from my phone as it was giving me way too much anxiety.
Basically this book worked as a Mental Health Journal for me in that phase. Let me tell you how.
FIRST – you track the behavior; you figure out what triggers the behavior; and you determine what “rewards” the behavior … in other words, you figure out frequency, trigger, and pay off for the behavior/habits.
SECOND – you break down the process and replace the behavior with a new behavior that moves you towards the final desired behavior.
I have to say this book did magic on me. Trust me It is a very effective method. It encompasses everything needed in building good habits and breaking bad ones, that are affecting your life.
A simple formula for Building a good habit and breaking bad ones –
Make it obvious <–> Make it invisible
Make it attractive <–> Make it unattractive
Make it easy <–> Make it difficult
Make it satisfying <–> Make it unsatisfying
That’s how self-help books make you understand things with such simplicity. I could’ve instanced stories from my own experience proving each and every one of the above points true. It’s simple. It is doable. And trust me It works.

4. Everyone has a story by Savi Sharma
To be honest I read this book only because of the quotes, poetry, and phrases it has. I am not a fictional book reader, But one day My brother bought this book for me, and the title actually grabbed my attention and I started reading it. As the Title says Everyone Has a Story ”, It is the story of four characters Meera, Vivaan, Kabir, and Nisha. Each of them has a story to tell.
And surprisingly, This book made me share my story with the world.

5. What the most successful people do before breakfast by Laura Vanderkam
One of the best self-help books, In this, Vanderkam shows us how to maximize our valuable mornings, make the most of our working hours, and enjoy the results with deeply satisfying weekends. Basically how to reinvent your morning routines and kick-starting your day with positivity and productivity.
Early mornings are the time when we have the most control of our schedule. It’s real-time to yourself with no distractions.
In my opinion, having a morning routine gives you a sense of control over your life. And I read this book when I was super pissed off with my life because of what I was doing for the past 3 months. That was just Netflix, Games, Surfing on social media, sleep and that’s it, yeah that’s it! I knew I had to change this and only a good routine can help me with that.
And I made a morning routine for myself!
This is how my morning routine looks like :
- Wake up @6am
- Drink 1 glass of water
- Walk for 10 mins (Warm-up)
- Basic workout/stretching/cycling
- Meditate for 15 mins.
- Breakfast with Book
- Cold shower
However, this is the most effective morning routine I have ever had to nurture my mental and physical health. I am done with most of the basic self-care activities, first in the day. And sticking to this routine is not a Task for me, it’s something I enjoy doing.
P.S – *I can’t believe I’m sticking to this routine 😂
So it’s very crucial to constantly look at our days to evaluate what brings us pleasure and what does not, and then figure out how you can spend more hours pursuing pleasure and fewer hours doing things you don’t care about.
Bro make a morning routine for yourself, trust me it helps!
6. The things you can see only when you slow down by Hay, Louise L.
OH MY GOD! This book is MAGIC, Nothing less than that. It made me realize so many things altogether with such simplicity that was just way beyond my imagination. During those days that I tend to forget what I want in this life, I take a look at this book and surely be motivated again.
This book just gave me more reasons to be thankful that I am and helped me stop asking the world why I am still here. My story is not supposed to end yet. Life is indeed beautiful.
Basically this book addresses how to deal mindfully with negative emotions as well as life’s disappointments, anxious thoughts about your future, and how to increase self-awareness and how to discover it.
Some of my favorite lines from the book –
- “Whether we like it or not, we are all connected, and it is unthinkable to be happy all by yourself”.
- The world moves fast, but that doesn’t mean we have to.
- If someone looks perfect, then that is because you don’t know the person very well.”
- Please don’t call it love. What you are experiencing is an infatuation with no commitment or responsibility. Infatuation is not love because it begins and ends with you. Every relation comes with commitment and responsibility otherwise it is just another distraction.
However, This book talks about – Rest, Passion, Relationships, Life, Love, Mindfulness, The future, Spirituality.

In conclusion, Self-help books are the world, it’s mysteries, it’s history and it’s knowledge, all contained in those pages.
Reading books is such a wonderful way to relax. It is a meditation for me and a secret recipe for my self-exploration sessions. I am in love with books. And trust me books love you back too.
Imagine sitting down after a long tiring day with a cup of coffee in your hands, handpicking a book and taking it with you, running your finger down the spine, opening those pages and smelling the unique scent of old books. Imagine getting lost in the pages, discovering a small world within a four-walled room.
I repeat, why shouldn’t you read books?
